Windows 11 Playing Hard To Get: Part 2

I finally got around to working on getting Windows 11 Pro installed to an unsupported PC. The machine that I installed the OS to wasn’t my main workstation though. Since installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware can lead to some issues in the future that may be difficult to resolve or get around I’ve elected not to run it on my main workstation. Instead, I’ve installed it on an the older Dell Latitude Dell laptop that I mostly use for internet browsing while on the couch watching TV or watching Netflix on while cooking. It’s currently running just fine on the older Dell laptop with a 5th gen I7 so I’m fairly confident that it would run just as good on most intel processors that ran Windows 10. By the time you read this there will likely be a much easier way to install Windows 11 while bypassing the requirements. Here is the method I used to install the update from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.

  • Download the Win10_21H1_English_x64.iso from Microsoft
  • Create a folder somewhere on your computer (Desktop is where I created mine)
  • Mount the Win10_21H1_English_x64.iso and copy all contents from the iso into the new folder you just created
  • Download the Win11_English_x64.iso from Microsoft
  • Mount Win11_English_x64.iso and then copy \sources\install.wim to the new folder that you created, following the same path. I.E. \new_folder\sources\install.wim
  • Select “replace” when prompted to overwrite file in the destination folder
  • Once this file has been copied, go to the root of the new folder and execute setup.exe

Once you’ve executed setup.exe, the Windows installer will begin to run which will in turn upgrade your current Windows 10 install to Windows 11. Don’t get nervous when the installer references Windows 10, this is a byproduct of the method in which we created the custom installer. Once the setup is finally complete (which will take a while), you will be booted into Windows 11.
